Representative Hanabusa's Statement Regarding Steve Bannon's Departure from the White House

August 18, 2017
Press Release

Honolulu, HI -- In response to Steve Bannon's departure from his position as President Trump's Chief Strategist, Representative Hanabusa offers the following statement:

"Steve Bannon should never have been President Trump's Chief Strategist in the White House and his departure is long overdue. Bannon's ties to the white nationalist movement are contrary to core American values and his innate desire to divide racial groups for political gain has no place within our nation's highest office.

President Trump followed his instincts and appointed Bannon.  Bannon's departure does not mean President Trump has changed his views or disagrees with Bannon's political strategies.  In fact, the decision to call for Bannon's departure was apparently made by Chief of Staff Kelly.

President Trump is still defiant, indignant and wrong regarding his response to Charlottesville.  Simply put, the President has failed lead with moral clarity and he has emboldened racists, bigots and anti-Semites. While I celebrate Bannon's departure, I see no evidence President Trump has changed his values or beliefs.
