Hanabusa Statement on Masterpiece Cakeshop SCOTUS Ruling
“The Supreme Court’s ruling is an unfortunate start to LGBTQ Pride Month and a reminder that we have a lot of work ahead of us. Every person is free to be exactly who they are and to love who they love," said Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. "This is a situation where the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against a government commission’s failure to afford due process. They did not, in anyway, reverse the progress we have made to protect and advance the innate rights of our LGBTQ community. However, it is a clear warning to government that they should not insert their individual beliefs into a fair and impartial decision-making process."
In November 2017, Congresswoman Hanabusa joined 36 Senators and 174 House members in an amici brief to the Supreme Court supporting the gay couple who was denied service by a bakery. The bakery refused to bake the couple a cake because of the couple’s LGBTQ identity.
