Congresswoman Hanabusa’s Statement on Possible North Korea Meeting
Last weekend, from Friday March 2 through Sunday March 4, Congresswoman Hanabusa attended the Aspen Institute’s Congressional Program titled “Finding a Diplomatic Solution to the North Korea Crisis” at Stanford University. The conference featured three days of round table discussions with academics, and representatives from the military and diplomatic community.
“If this unprecedented meeting takes place, it would mark an important step in negotiations to deescalate nuclear tensions on the Korean Peninsula and figure out where the North Korean regime fits in the Asia Pacific community. I would hope that President Trump keeps the best interests of the American people, our allies in the region and the more than 23,000 US troops stationed in South Korea in mind when engaging with Kim jong Un and his supporters. These longstanding tensions involve many regional actors, main among them China, and we must be careful and measured in our negotiations.”
